What is Sheesham?

Sheesham (Dalbergia sissoo), also called Indian rosewood or North Indian rosewood, is a dense hardwood native to the Indian subcontinent. It has been used in Indian furniture making for centuries, particularly in Punjab and Rajasthan. Sheesham is characterised by its rich, dark grain — ranging from golden brown to deep chocolate — and its distinctive swirling figuring that makes each piece unique.

What is Teak?

Teak (Tectona grandis) is the world's benchmark hardwood for exterior and high-specification interior furniture. Indian plantation teak from the Western Ghats is considered among the finest available. Teak is lighter in colour than sheesham — a warm golden-brown that deepens with age — with a straighter, more uniform grain.

Durability Comparison

Teak wins outdoors. Teak's natural oil content makes it exceptionally resistant to moisture, rot and insects — properties that sheesham does not share to the same degree. For garden furniture, poolside pieces or furniture in humid coastal environments, teak is the clear choice.

Indoors, both excel. In interior applications with normal humidity control, both woods perform equally well. A well-made sheesham wardrobe will last as long as a teak equivalent.

Aesthetic Comparison

This is the most subjective dimension — and often the deciding factor.

Sheesham has a wilder, more characterful appearance. The swirling grain, rich colour variation and natural figuring make each piece one-of-a-kind. It suits traditional, rustic, Rajasthani-inspired and dark-palette interiors.

Teak is more refined and uniform. Its straight grain and consistent warm-gold colour make it easier to match across multiple pieces in the same room. It suits contemporary, Scandi-influenced, natural-light-rich interiors.

Price Comparison

Sheesham is generally 20–35% less expensive than equivalent teak furniture in India. This is because sheesham grows faster and is more widely available as plantation timber. If budget is a constraint but you want genuine solid hardwood, sheesham is the more economical choice.

Choose teak if: you want maximum durability, outdoor or humid-environment use, a lighter natural colour palette, or you're buying for a luxury hotel or export market where teak's international reputation carries weight.
