India has thousands of furniture exporters — from one-man trading operations to large manufacturers with 500+ employees. The challenge for international buyers is distinguishing between them. A bad choice means delayed shipments, quality failures, and disputes across time zones. A good choice means a manufacturing partner who delivers year after year. Here is how to tell them apart.
Indian furniture export comes from three types of suppliers, and understanding the difference is the first step:
Companies that own and operate their own factory. The best option for large or repeat orders. You deal directly with the production team, quality issues are resolved at source, and pricing has no middleman markup. The downside: manufacturers typically specialise in one category (steel institutional furniture, or wooden residential furniture, or rattan outdoor furniture — rarely all three).
Companies that manufacture their own core products but also source from other manufacturers to offer a wider range. Good for buyers who need a one-stop supply of multiple furniture categories. Quality control is more complex because not everything is made in-house.
Pure intermediaries who source from manufacturers and add a margin. They offer the widest product range and handle all export logistics, but their prices are higher and they have no direct quality control. Fine for small, one-off orders; not recommended for large institutional procurement.
For institutional buyers (schools, hotels, hospitals, government) placing orders above USD 10,000, a direct manufacturer is almost always the right choice.
Every legal Indian exporter must have an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) issued by DGFT. Ask for the IEC number and verify it at dgft.gov.in. If they cannot provide it, they cannot legally export.
If one supplier quotes 40% less than every other manufacturer for the same specification, the specification is not the same. Common shortcuts: thinner steel gauge, thinner powder coat, no quality testing. Request material test certificates.
A legitimate manufacturer has a physical factory. Request the factory address and cross-check on Google Maps satellite view. Offer to visit (or pay for a video call tour). Any hesitation is a red flag.
No reputable manufacturer with an established export track record requires 100% advance from a first-time buyer. Standard is 30–50% advance, balance on BL copy. 100% advance demands are the primary mechanism for furniture export fraud.
Any exporter who has been doing this for more than a year has client references. Request three names and contact details. Actually contact them. Two minutes of due diligence here prevents months of dispute resolution.
All Indian businesses with turnover above ₹20 lakh must be GST registered. Ask for the GSTIN and verify at gst.gov.in. An unregistered supplier is either very small or non-compliant — neither is reassuring for an international order.
India's two largest B2B marketplaces. Most Indian manufacturers list here. Filter by "verified supplier" status and look for suppliers with GST-verified badges. Use these for initial discovery, but do not place orders without offline verification.
FIEO maintains a directory of verified Indian exporters. fieo.org is more reliable than general B2B marketplaces because FIEO membership requires documentation verification.
"[product] manufacturer India" returns manufacturer websites directly. A manufacturer with a professional website, specific product pages, and verifiable contact details is a better starting point than an anonymous IndiaMART listing.
India ITME, IFEX (India Furniture Expo), and Ambiente India attract verified manufacturers. Meeting a supplier face-to-face at a trade show significantly reduces verification risk.
