Buyer ToolsA steel almirah is usually the one piece of bedroom furniture a family keeps for decades. Getting the size, door type and locker right at the start saves money and space. This guide covers what to check before you buy a steel almirah for your home. If you are buying for an office, see our office almirah guide instead.
Measure the height, width and depth of the space, and the room in front of it. A hinged-door almirah needs clear space for the doors to swing open fully, roughly the width of one door. Check doorways and staircases too, so the almirah can actually be carried into the room.
| Household | Usually suits |
|---|---|
| One person, small bedroom | Single-door or compact two-door almirah |
| Couple | Full-height two-door almirah |
| Family room or shared storage | Wide three- or four-door wardrobe |
| Small room with no door clearance | Sliding-door wardrobe |
The classic Indian steel almirah. Both doors open fully, so every shelf is easy to reach. Best when you have floor space in front.
Doors slide sideways instead of swinging out, which suits smaller bedrooms. Only one side opens at a time.
A full-length mirror on the door saves wall space and doubles as a dressing mirror.
Decide what will go in it. Clothes on hangers need a hanging rod and full height on one side. Folded clothes, linen and saris need shelves. Most home almirahs combine both, with a small drawer or inner locker for valuables.
A separate lockable compartment inside the almirah keeps jewellery, cash and documents apart from everyday clothes. Check that the main doors have a proper lock, not just a latch. For high-value jewellery, a digital safe fixed inside the almirah adds a second layer of protection.
Ask what steel the almirah is made from and how it is finished. Our almirahs are made from mild steel sheet from TATA Steel and JSW and are powder coated, which holds up better than ordinary paint against scratches and damp. Look for doors that close evenly, without sagging at the hinge side, and shelves that do not bend under weight.
The Royal Safe Company has made safes and steel furniture since 1934 in our own factory in Sonipat, Haryana. Because we manufacture ourselves, almirahs can be made to a custom size and colour. Steel furniture made by us carries a 2-year guarantee within India. There is no minimum order for customers in India.

For one person, a two-door almirah around 1830mm tall and 900mm wide is usually enough. For a couple or a family room, look at a wider almirah or a three- or four-door wardrobe. Measure the wall space and leave room for the doors to open fully.
Hinged doors open fully and give easy access to every shelf, but need clear space in front. Sliding doors suit smaller bedrooms where there is no room for doors to swing open, though only one side can be opened at a time.
Steel resists termites and moisture, does not swell in the monsoon, and usually lasts longer before hinges and joints loosen. Wood gives a warmer look and costs less at first. Many homes use steel for valuables and daily clothes storage.
Yes. Most two-door steel almirahs can have a separate inner locker for jewellery, cash and documents. For high-value items, a separate digital safe fixed inside the almirah gives more protection.
Keep it a few centimetres away from damp walls, wipe it with a dry cloth, avoid placing it directly on a wet floor, and touch up any deep scratches in the powder coat so moisture cannot reach the steel.
