Institutional Lockers in India: A Buyer's Guide for Schools, Offices and Hospitals

2026-07-08  ·  7 min read

Lockers are among the most purchased institutional furniture items in India — procured by schools, universities, hospitals, offices, banks, gyms and factories in volumes ranging from a single unit to several thousand. This guide covers everything a procurement manager or institution head needs to know before placing an order.

Types of Institutional Lockers

Indian locker manufacturers produce a wide range of configurations:

  • Single-door full-height lockers: 6 feet tall, used in gyms, hospitals and corporate offices. Each unit provides maximum personal storage.
  • Two-tier lockers: Each column divided into two compartments. Ideal for schools and coaching institutes where storage needs are modest.
  • Three-tier and four-tier lockers: Maximum density. Commonly used in schools, colleges and large offices where floor space is limited.
  • Locker banks: Multiple columns welded or bolted into a single freestanding unit with a shared roof panel. Available in 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15-door configurations.
  • Coin-operated or digital lockers: Used in public spaces, shopping centres and hospitals.

Steel Gauge: What to Specify

The steel gauge determines locker durability. Standard institutional lockers use 20-gauge steel for doors and panels. For heavy-use environments — hospitals, factories, schools with high footfall — specify 18-gauge or 16-gauge doors. Thinner than 20-gauge is unsuitable for institutional use and should be avoided.

Locking Options

Indian manufacturers offer multiple locking mechanisms:

  • Hasp-and-padlock: User supplies their own padlock. Lowest cost, most flexible.
  • Key lock (3-point locking): Manufacturer-supplied cylinder lock with master key option. Standard for schools and offices.
  • Combination lock: No key required. Preferred by hospitals and gyms.
  • Digital keypad or RFID: Premium option for corporate offices and hotels. Allows central audit trail.

Powder Coat Colours and Finishes

Standard institutional lockers are supplied in grey, off-white or beige powder coat. Custom colours (including RAL and Pantone matching) are available from most quality manufacturers for institutional branding. Expect a 1–2 week additional lead time for custom colours.

Pricing Benchmarks in India (2026)

Indicative pricing for quality steel lockers manufactured in India:

  • Single-door full-height locker (18-gauge): ₹4,500–₹7,500 per unit
  • Two-tier locker bank (6 doors, 20-gauge): ₹8,000–₹14,000 per bank
  • Four-tier locker bank (12 doors, 20-gauge): ₹12,000–₹20,000 per bank

Prices vary based on gauge, locking mechanism, colour and order volume. Bulk orders (50+ units) typically attract 10–20% lower unit pricing.
