Student lockers are the single most-abused piece of furniture in any school or college. They are slammed hundreds of times per year, used as climbing frames, kicked when stuck, and expected to survive a decade of institutional life. Choosing the right manufacturer is the difference between lockers that last 15 years and lockers that need replacing in 3.
Indian schools and colleges use several locker configurations depending on space, student count, and budget:
One compartment per unit, approximately 300×450×1800mm. Used in boarding schools and university hostels where each student needs space for a full change of clothes, books, and personal items. Most expensive per student but highest storage capacity.
Two compartments stacked vertically, each approximately 300×450×900mm. The most common configuration for secondary schools and colleges. Good balance between storage capacity and cost per student.
Three or four compartments per vertical stack. Each compartment is smaller — typically 300×450×600mm (3-tier) or 300×450×450mm (4-tier). Used in day schools and colleges where students only need to store books and stationery, not personal items.
Multiple columns joined into a single structural bank — 3, 4, 6, or 8 columns per bank. Most space-efficient for corridors and locker rooms. Each bank is a single structural unit which is more stable than individual lockers placed side by side.

The Indian market is flooded with lockers that look identical to institutional-grade products in photographs but fail within two years. The difference is in the steel gauge and the manufacturing process, not the appearance.
The body panels of a school locker should be a minimum of 20 gauge CRCA steel (0.9mm). The door should be 18 gauge (1.2mm) — the door takes far more stress than the body because of opening and closing cycles. The frame or corner posts should be 16 gauge (1.6mm) or formed from heavy-gauge angle section.
Many budget locker manufacturers use 24-gauge (0.6mm) steel throughout — this is the steel used in kitchen exhaust ducting, not institutional furniture. It dents with a firm kick and will deform within the first year of school use.
There are two hinge types used in school lockers: piano hinge (continuous hinge running the full door height) and butt hinges (two or three point hinges). Piano hinges distribute stress along the full door edge and are significantly more durable in high-cycle applications. Butt hinges are cheaper and adequate for office lockers; for schools, piano hinges are the correct specification.
For most Indian government and mid-range private schools, a key cam lock or hasp provision is the practical choice. Digital locks are recommended for international-curriculum schools and premium private institutions.
A school locker is used in a corridor or locker room — a high-humidity, high-traffic environment. The powder coating is the only protection the steel has against rust. A coat that is too thin will chip within two years, exposing the steel to corridor humidity and initiating rust that spreads under the intact coating.
Minimum specification: 60 microns. Institutional specification: 80–100 microns. The colour should be RAL-standard (European colour standard) so replacements match the original precisely — important when replacing damaged units in a bank of 30.

For a school of 800 students requiring book storage only: 800 triple-tier compartments = approximately 267 triple-tier locker units (3 compartments per unit). A bank of 6 triple-tier lockers (18 compartments) takes 900mm of corridor width. You need approximately 45 metres of locker frontage for 800 students.
