Buyer ToolsA Class 1 child and a Class 12 student cannot sit comfortably at the same desk. When the desk is too high, shoulders hunch; when the seat is too high, feet dangle and children slide forward. This chart gives school desk and bench sizes by class and age, in mm and inches, so you can order the right size for each section of the school.
The European school furniture standard EN 1729 sorts desks and chairs into size marks by the pupil's height. The table below maps those sizes to typical Indian classes. Check a few pupils' heights in each class, because children of the same age vary a lot.
| Classes (typical) | Pupil height | Seat height | Desk height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nursery – KG | 93–116 cm | 260 mm (10 in) | 460 mm (18 in) |
| Classes 1–2 | 108–121 cm | 310 mm (12 in) | 530 mm (21 in) |
| Classes 3–4 | 119–142 cm | 350 mm (14 in) | 590 mm (23 in) |
| Classes 5–6 | 133–159 cm | 380 mm (15 in) | 640 mm (25 in) |
| Classes 7–9 | 146–176.5 cm | 430 mm (17 in) | 710 mm (28 in) |
| Classes 10–12 and college | 159–188 cm | 460 mm (18 in) | 760 mm (30 in) |
Many Indian schools buy only two or three sizes — junior, middle and senior — rather than one per class. That keeps ordering simple, as long as each size covers the heights of the pupils who will use it.
| Desk type | Typical top size (W × D) | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Single desk | 600 × 450 mm (24 × 18 in) | Exams, flexible layouts, senior classes |
| Two-seater desk | 1100–1200 × 450 mm (43–47 × 18 in) | Most Indian classrooms |
| Three-seater desk | 1500–1650 × 450 mm (59–65 × 18 in) | Crowded classrooms; harder to move and seat for exams |
Allow roughly 1.0–1.2 square metres per pupil for the seating area, plus space at the front for the teacher's table and board. For two-seater desks, leave about 600 mm between rows and a 900 mm aisle so pupils can move and the teacher can reach every desk. A common 6 × 7 m classroom seats about 40 pupils at 20 two-seater desks.
Steel frames with a laminated or wooden top stand up to daily use for many years, do not loosen at the joints like nailed wooden desks, resist termites and damp, and can be repaired by replacing the top. Our steel vs wooden furniture guide compares the two in detail.

A single school desk top is typically 600 × 450 mm and a two-seater is 1100–1200 × 450 mm. Desk height depends on the pupils: about 530 mm for Classes 1–2, 640 mm for Classes 5–6 and 760 mm for Classes 10–12.
About 310 mm for Classes 1–2, 350 mm for Classes 3–4, 380 mm for Classes 5–6, 430 mm for Classes 7–9 and 460 mm for Classes 10–12, based on the EN 1729 size marks.
Desk-bench combos cost less per seat and stay in neat rows. Separate desks and chairs cost more but fit pupils better and suit group work and exams.
