The most important specification is the steel grade. School furniture should be manufactured from CRCA steel — Cold Rolled Close Annealed — at a minimum of 18 gauge (1.2mm) thickness. At 20–22 gauge (0.9–1.0mm), the steel is adequate for light-use furniture. At 18 gauge (1.2mm) and below, it is institutional grade.
Ask any manufacturer which steel mill supplies their raw material. Tata Steel, SAIL, and JSW are the three Indian mills that produce consistent-quality CRCA suitable for institutional furniture. A manufacturer who cannot name their steel mill is sourcing from the spot market, and spot market CRCA quality varies significantly.
MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding is the standard for institutional furniture. Spot welding is acceptable for light-duty applications but not for primary structural joints in school furniture. Ask to see the welding process — a reputable manufacturer will show you. Look for clean, continuous weld beads with no gaps or burn-through.
Powder coating on school furniture should be a minimum of 60 microns, ideally 80–100 microns. Below 60 microns, the coating will chip within two years of institutional use. A cross-hatch adhesion test (ISO 2409) is the standard quality check — a good manufacturer will have results on file.
A school or university typically needs furniture for multiple classrooms simultaneously. A manufacturer with a capacity of 20–30 units per month cannot supply 500 classroom desks in a reasonable timeframe. Ask for the monthly production capacity and confirm it against your order requirement and timeline.
Government schools, CBSE-affiliated institutions, and universities all have specific procurement processes including GFR compliance, GeM portal orders, and state tender requirements. A manufacturer who has never dealt with these processes will create delays. Ask for references from institutional clients — not residential or commercial ones.
